Introduction
Based on real user data collected by WePlan Analytics, this report presents a comparative view of communication behavior across four APAC markets: Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The analysis focuses on the share of communications carried out through Over-The-Top (OTT) apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Zalo, Line) versus traditional mobile voice calls across major operators in each country during October 2025.
Indonesia
OTT calls have clearly established themselves as the predominant communication channel in the Indonesian market. For all major operators, more than 90% of total user calls are made through OTT apps, highlighting the dominant role of internet-based voice services over traditional mobile voice.

Malaysia
In Malaysia, OTT calls constitute the main share of total phone calls among all major operators. CelcomDigi, Maxis, and U Mobile show higher proportions of OTT calls compared to traditional ones, with OTT usage ranging between approximately 60% and 70% of total calls, and traditional voice accounting for the remaining share.

Philippines
In the Philippines, OTT calls represent the predominant form of communication for all major operators. DITO, Globe, and Smart each record a greater percentage of OTT calls than traditional mobile voice calls, with OTT usage standing between 60% and 70% of total call activity.

Vietnam
In Vietnam, OTT calls account for the majority of total phone communications across all major operators. Vietnamobile registers the highest proportion of OTT calls, with approximately 70% of total call activity conducted via app-based platforms. In contrast, Viettel shows the lowest share of OTT usage, though it still exceeds traditional voice calls, with around 60% of total calls made through OTT services. MobiFone and Vinaphone fall between these two, reinforcing the overall trend toward digital communication across the Vietnamese market.
